Bernard Howard Barker, 89, resident of Lindenhurst, Illinois, died June 9, 2023. He was born October 25, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of John Barker and Grace Bowen Barker. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley Irene Barker, and his daughter, Cynthia Barker Brocklebank.
Those left to mourn his passing are his three daughters, Theresa Barker Wolfe (John), Donna Barker Nicpon (John), Anna Barker Ward (Robert), ten grandchildren (Tracie, Timothy, Laura, John, Jacob, Anthony, Catherine, Megan, Kaitlin, and Kasey), and sixteen great-grandchildren (David, Arrissa, Lilyana, Marco, Angel, Brayden, Natalie, Laila, Chaye, Alexandra “Stella,” Samuel, Penelope, Caroline, Judah, Rosalyn, and Harper).
Bernard worked as a police officer for the Baltimore City Police Department in Maryland and retired as a lieutenant. While working as a police officer, he also served in the Army National Guard and retired as a Captain. After retirement, Bernard took a position teaching for Northwestern University’s Traffic Institute (TI). With the TI, he traveled around the US and several other countries to teach police management programs. When he retired from Northwestern University, he lived out the rest of his days with his “Girly Shirley,” the love of his life.
Memorial Services will be on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at:
Christ Episcopal Church
410 Grand Avenue
Waukegan, Illinois 60085
Visitation at 9am followed by the service at 10am.
Internment will be in the Christ Church Memorial Garden Immediately following the service.
