Donald Paul Martin, father, electrical engineer, and inventor, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 78 on Tuesday August 27th 2019. Don was born in Newark, New Jersey to loving parents Byron and Violet Martin in 1940, the second son following his brother Leslie. He graduated from MIT with his degree in Electrical Engineering going on to pioneer work in early microcomputer technology. He owned Qwint Systems, and was consultant for a number of companies whom he helped solve design problems in diverse fields and later taught himself to become a successful stock market investor.

When life brought him two daughters, Janine and Dana, he made it his mission to provide his children every opportunity to flourish. As a single father Don came to earn the title “Mr. Mom” from walking a teething baby back and forth in the middle of the night, to encouraging both his daughters to think and act independently, then finally by fostering a love of learning through deep discussion and energetic debate. A grandfather to three grandchildren, he reveled in the joy of their curious minds and introduced them to many of his favorite pastimes.

Don enjoyed a full, active life. He often had multiple projects ongoing or inventions in the works. He loved a good puzzle, participating in lively debate, and playing with new technology. He was an active participant in a variety of clubs from investment to magic to computers. Whether someone had known him a day or a decade he left an unforgettable footprint in people’s lives.

He was a generous, unforgettable and kind friend to all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

He’s survived by his daughters Janine Nicole Martin PhD, Dana Louise (Janelle) Martin PsyD, and beloved grandchildren Patrick, Nathan and Evelyn Leary.

Donald’s visitation will be held on Saturday August 31st, 2019 from 10:30am until noon at the Northern Illinois Funeral Services in Volo, Illinois.

Following this friends and family will gather at his home for a celebration of his life beginning at 2pm.
