Loraine Elizabeth (Miller) Grant 91, of Clive, IA (more recently of Lake Bluff, IL) died on February 23, 2021 at The Sheridan at Green Oaks in Lake Bluff, IL. Mrs. Grant was born to Weldon and Mildred (Cory) Miller of Des Moines, IA. Loraine lettered in golf at North High School. After Loraine graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, in 1951 with a degree in experimental food science (a relatively new degree program at that time) she married her college sweetheart William Robert Grant on August 12, 1951. Bill was a Lieutenant in the army and while he was stationed at Fort Sill, OK, Loraine worked at Long Bell Lumber Co. and later she worked at the army procurement department when Bill was at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, CO. During the time that Bill served in Korea, Loraine resided in Des Moines, IA and worked as a dietitian at Drake University. When her husband returned from The Korean War, they settled in Kansas City Mo where she was dietitian for the Kansas gas company. Following the Korean War, the Grants lived in Kansas City, MO, where Loraine worked as a dietitian for the Kansas Gas Company; Rochelle, IL, where Loraine was a substitute teacher; Clovis, NM, where she was a Welcome Wagon representative helping newcomers settle into the area. Upon their return to Des Moines, IA, Loraine managed the cafeteria at Iowa Methodist Hospital, eventually retiring from her position as the dietary manager at Urbandale (IA) Health Center. Loraine and Bill enjoyed classical music performances and traveling the world together. Loraine was preceded in death by her husband who passed away in July 2020. Loraine and Bill had three children: Dr. Stephen Grant of Bethesda, MD, Nancy Scott of Austin TX, and Brian (Ruth Ann) Grant of Libertyville, IL. She adored her six grandchildren: Matthew Grant, Peter Grant, Dr. Anderson Grant, Ian Grant, Adam Scott and Katie (David) Baron . She is also survived by her sister Sally and brother-in-law Jerry Cochran of Hoboken, NJ, as well as former daughter-in-law Jill Hughes, whom she loved like a daughter. A Virtual Memorial Service will be held on Sunday March 7, 2021 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Cheri Tuccy officiating. Following the virtual Memorial Service at Northern Illinois Funeral Services, Volo, IL, on what would have been Loraine’s 92nd birthday, March 7, 2021, she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband at a later date in Highland Memorial Gardens, Des Moines, IA. Due to Covid-19, the family has decided to live stream the service and visitation.
